Leica S2 versus Fujifilm GFX 50S
The Leica S2 and the Fujifilm GFX 50S are two professional cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2008 and September 2016. The S2 is a DSLR, while the GFX is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Both cameras are equipped with a medium format sensor. The Leica has a resolution of 37.5 megapixel, whereas the Fujifilm provides 51.1 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm GFX 50S is notably smaller (28 percent) than the Leica S2. Moreover, the GFX is substantially lighter (48 percent) than the S2. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The GFX was launched at a markedly lower price (by 72 percent) than the S2, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Leica S2 vs Fujifilm GFX 50S
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Leica S2 features a medium format sensor and the Fujifilm GFX 50S a medium format sensor. The sensor area in the GFX is 8 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 0.8 and 0.79. The sensor in the S2 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GFX offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 51.1MP, the GFX offers a higher resolution than the S2 (37.5MP), but the GFX has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.33μm versus 6.00μm for the S2). Yet, the GFX is a much more recent model (by 7 years and 11 months) than the S2, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The GFX indeed provides for movie recording, while the S2 does not. The highest resolution format that the GFX can use is 1080/30p.

The GFX is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the S2 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the S2 was succeeded by the Leica S Typ 006.

So how do things add up? Which of the two cameras – the Leica S2 or the Fujifilm GFX 50S – has the upper hand? The listing below highlights the relative strengths of the two models.

In any case, while the comparison of the spec-sheets of cameras can offer a general idea of their imaging potential, it remains partial and cannot reveal, for example, the handling experience and imaging performance when actually working with the S2 or the GFX. User reviews, such as those found at amazon, can sometimes inform about these issues, but such feedback is often incomplete, inconsistent, and biased. This is why expert reviews are important. Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. Thus, a score needs to be put into the context of the launch date and the launch price of the camera, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning. It should also be noted that some of the review sites have over time altered the way they render their verdicts.
