The Leica S (Typ 007) and the Hasselblad X1D-50c are two professional cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2014 and June 2016. The S Typ 007 is a DSLR, while the X1D is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Both cameras are equipped with a medium format sensor. The Leica has a resolution of 37.5 megapixel, whereas the Hasselblad provides 51.3 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Hasselblad X1D is notably smaller (23 percent) than the Leica S Typ 007. Moreover, the X1D is substantially lighter (42 percent) than the S Typ 007. Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X1D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 63 percent) than the S Typ 007, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Leica S Typ 007 vs Hasselblad X1D

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature a medium format sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the X1D is 7 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have format factors, respectively, of 0.8 (S Typ 007) and 0.79. The sensor in the S Typ 007 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the X1D offers a 4:3 aspect.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.

Leica S Typ 007 and Hasselblad X1D sensor measures

With 51.3MP, the X1D offers a higher resolution than the S Typ 007 (37.5MP), but the X1D has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.30μm versus 6.00μm for the S Typ 007). Yet, the X1D is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 9 months) than the S Typ 007, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

S Typ 007 versus X1D MP

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the S Typ 007 provides a higher video resolution than the X1D. It can shoot video footage at 4K/24p, while the Hasselblad is limited to 1080/25p.
