Leica Q Typ 116 versus Leica M10
The Leica Q (Typ 116) and the Leica M10 (Typ 3656) are two enthusiast cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in June 2015 and January 2017. The Q Typ 116 is a fixed lens compact, while the M10 is a rangefinder-style mirrorless. Both cameras are equipped with a full frame sensor. The Q Typ 116 has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the M10 provides 23.8 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica M10 is notably larger (7 percent) than the Leica Q Typ 116. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the Q Typ 116 nor the M10 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the Q Typ 116 has a lens build in, whereas the M10 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The Q Typ 116 was launched at a lower price than the M10, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Leica Q Typ 116 vs Leica M10
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature a full frame sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the M10 is 1 percent smaller. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
With 24MP, the Q Typ 116 offers a slightly higher resolution than the M10 (23.8MP), but the Q Typ 116 nevertheless has the same individual pixel size (pixel pitch of 6.00μm) as the M10 due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the M10 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 7 months) than the Q Typ 116, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the M10 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for most cameras. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The Q Typ 116 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the M10 does not. The highest resolution format that the Q Typ 116 can use is 1080/60p.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Is the Leica Q Typ 116 better than the Leica M10 or vice versa? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.

The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense. It should also be noted that some of the review sites have over time altered the way they render their verdicts.
