Leica Q Typ 116 versus Fujifilm X100T

The Leica Q (Typ 116) and the Fujifilm X100T are two enthusiast cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in June 2015 and September 2014. Both the Q Typ 116 and the X100T are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on a full frame (Q Typ 116) and an APS-C (X100T) sensor. The Leica has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Fujifilm provides 16 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X100T is notably smaller (10 percent) than the Leica Q Typ 116. Moreover, the X100T is markedly lighter (31 percent) than the Q Typ 116. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the Q Typ 116 nor the X100T are weather-sealed.

Concerning battery life, the Q Typ 116 gets 300 shots out of its BP-DC12 battery, while the X100T can take 330 images on a single charge of its NP-95 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X100T was launched at a markedly lower price (by 69 percent) than the Q Typ 116, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Leica Q Typ 116 vs Fujifilm X100T

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Leica Q Typ 116 features a full frame sensor and the Fujifilm X100T an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the X100T is 57 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

With 24MP, the Q Typ 116 offers a higher resolution than the X100T (16MP), but the Q Typ 116 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 6.00μm versus 4.80μm for the X100T) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the Q Typ 116 is a somewhat more recent model (by 8 months) than the X100T, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X100T has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, and both provide the same movie specifications (1080/60p).

However, the one in the Q Typ 116 offers a substantially higher resolution than the one in the X100T (3680k vs 2360k dots). Both the Q Typ 116 and the X100T have build-in prime lenses. The Q Typ 116 has a 28mm f/1.7 optic and the X100T offers a 35mm f/2.0 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Leica provides a wider angle of view than the Fujifilm. The Q Typ 116 offers the faster maximum aperture.

The Q Typ 116 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the X100T has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the X100T was succeeded by the Fujifilm X100F.

The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense.
