Leica M Typ 262 vs Nikon B700
The Leica M (Typ 262) and the Nikon Coolpix B700 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in November 2015 and February 2016. The M Typ 262 is a rangefinder-style mirrorless camera, while the B700 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a full frame (M Typ 262) and a 1/2.3-inch (B700) sensor. The Leica has a resolution of 23.7 megapixels, whereas the Nikon provides 20.2 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon B700 is somewhat smaller (4 percent) than the Leica M Typ 262. It is worth mentioning in this context that the M Typ 262 is splash and dust resistant, while the B700 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The B700 was launched at a lower price than the M Typ 262, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Leica M Typ 262 features a full frame sensor and the Nikon B700 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the B700 is 97 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 5.6. The sensor in the M Typ 262 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the B700 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 23.7MP, the M Typ 262 offers a higher resolution than the B700 (20.2MP), but the M Typ 262 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 6.01μm versus 1.18μm for the B700) due to its larger sensor. However, the B700 is a somewhat more recent model (by 3 months) than the M Typ 262, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Leica M Typ 262 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the M Typ 262 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 29.8 x 19.9 inches or 75.6 x 50.5 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 23.8 x 15.9 inches or 60.5 x 40.4 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 19.8 x 13.3 inches or 50.4 x 33.7 cm. The corresponding values for the Nikon B700 are 25.9 x 19.4 inches or 65.8 x 49.4 cm for good quality, 20.7 x 15.6 inches or 52.7 x 39.5 cm for very good quality, and 17.3 x 13 inches or 43.9 x 32.9 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Leica M (Typ 262) has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 6400, which can be extended to ISO 100-6400. The corresponding ISO settings for the Nikon Coolpix B700 are ISO 100 to ISO 3200 (no boost).

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The B700 indeed provides for movie recording, while the M Typ 262 does not. The highest resolution format that the B700 can use is 4K/30p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The B700 has one, while the M Typ 262 does not. While the built-in flash of the B700 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.The B700 has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing. It is notable that the M Typ 262 has a hotshoe, while the B700 does not. This socket makes it possible to easily attach optional accessories, such as an external flash gun.
The B700 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Nikon. In contrast, the M Typ 262 has been discontinued (but can be found pre-owned on eBay).
