Leica Digilux 3 versus Fujifilm X100
The Leica Digilux 3 and the Fujifilm FinePix X100 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2006 and September 2010. The Digilux 3 is a DSLR, while the X100 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a Four Thirds (Digilux 3) and an APS-C (X100) sensor. The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X100 has a lens build in, whereas the Digilux 3 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X100 was launched at a lower price than the Digilux 3, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Leica Digilux 3 vs Fujifilm X100
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Leica Digilux 3 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Fujifilm X100 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the X100 is 66 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 1.5. The sensor in the Digilux 3 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the X100 offers a 3:2 aspect.
With 12.2MP, the X100 offers a higher resolution than the Digilux 3 (7.4MP), but the X100 nevertheless has marginally larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.53μm versus 5.51μm for the Digilux 3) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the X100 is a much more recent model (by 4 years) than the Digilux 3, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X100 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The X100 indeed provides for movie recording, while the Digilux 3 does not. The highest resolution format that the X100 can use is 720/30p.

Both the Digilux 3 and the X100 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The X100 was replaced by the Fujifilm X100S, while the Digilux 3 does not have a direct successor.
