The Leica D-LUX (Typ 109) and the Fujifilm X20 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2014 and January 2013. Both the D-LUX Typ 109 and the X20 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on a Four Thirds (D-LUX Typ 109) and a 2/3 (X20) sensor. The Leica has a resolution of 12.7 megapixel, whereas the Fujifilm provides 12 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X20 is notably larger (5 percent) than the Leica D-LUX Typ 109. However, the X20 is markedly lighter (13 percent) than the D-LUX Typ 109. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the D-LUX Typ 109 nor the X20 are weather-sealed.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X20 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 50 percent) than the D-LUX Typ 109, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Leica D-LUX Typ 109 vs Fujifilm X20

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Leica D-LUX Typ 109 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Fujifilm X20 a 2/3 sensor. The sensor area in the X20 is 74 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 3.9. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.

Leica D-LUX Typ 109 and Fujifilm X20 sensor measures

With 12.7MP, the D-LUX Typ 109 offers a slightly higher resolution than the X20 (12MP), but the D-LUX Typ 109 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.21μm versus 2.20μm for the X20) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the D-LUX Typ 109 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 8 months) than the X20, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X20 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

D-LUX Typ 109 versus X20 MP

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the D-LUX Typ 109 provides a higher video resolution than the X20. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 1080/60p.

Both the D-LUX Typ 109 and the X20 have zoom lenses build in. The D-LUX Typ 109 has a 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8 optic and the X20 offers a 28-112mm f/2.0-2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Leica provides a wider angle of view at the short end than the Fujifilm, but less tele-photo reach at the long end. The D-LUX Typ 109 offers the faster maximum aperture.

The D-LUX Typ 109 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the X20 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the X20 was succeeded by the Fujifilm X30.
