Leica D-LUX 5 vs M Typ 240
The Leica D-LUX 5 and the Leica M (Typ 240) are two enthusiast cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2010 and September 2012. The D-LUX 5 is a fixed lens compact, while the M Typ 240 is a rangefinder-style mirrorless. The cameras are based on a 1/1.7-inch (D-LUX 5) and a full frame (M Typ 240) sensor. The D-LUX 5 has a resolution of 10 megapixels, whereas the M Typ 240 provides 23.7 MP.

Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The D-LUX 5 was launched at a lower price than the M Typ 240, despite having a lens built in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Leica D-LUX 5 features a 1/1.7-inch sensor and the Leica M Typ 240 a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the M Typ 240 is 1761 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 4.4 and 1.0. The sensor in the D-LUX 5 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the M Typ 240 offers a 3:2 aspect. The D-LUX 5 has the particularity of featuring a switch that allows to toggle between multiple aspect ratios, while maintaining the same field of view and full image resolution.
With 23.7MP, the M Typ 240 offers a higher resolution than the D-LUX 5 (10MP), but the M Typ 240 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 6.01μm versus 2.14μm for the D-LUX 5) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the M Typ 240 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 11 months) than the D-LUX 5, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.
The resolution advantage of the Leica M Typ 240 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the M Typ 240 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 29.8 x 19.9 inches or 75.6 x 50.5 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 23.8 x 15.9 inches or 60.5 x 40.4 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 19.8 x 13.3 inches or 50.4 x 33.7 cm. The corresponding values for the Leica D-LUX 5 are 18.2 x 13.7 inches or 46.3 x 34.7 cm for good quality, 14.6 x 10.9 inches or 37.1 x 27.8 cm for very good quality, and 12.2 x 9.1 inches or 30.9 x 23.2 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Leica D-LUX 5 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 80 to ISO 3200, which can be extended to ISO 80-12800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Leica M (Typ 240) are ISO 200 to ISO 6400, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-6400.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the M Typ 240 provides a better video resolution than the D-LUX 5. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/25p, while the D-LUX 5 is limited to 720/60p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the M Typ 240 has an optical viewfinder, which can be very useful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the D-LUX 5 relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. That said, the D-LUX 5 can be equipped with an optional viewfinder – the EVF1. One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The D-LUX 5 has one, while the M Typ 240 does not. While the built-in flash of the D-LUX 5 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.
Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the D-LUX 5 and the M Typ 240 write their files to SDXC cards. The M Typ 240 supports UHS-I cards (Ultra High Speed data transfer of up to 104 MB/s), while the D-LUX 5 cannot take advantage of Ultra High Speed SD cards.

Both the D-LUX 5 and the M Typ 240 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The D-LUX 5 was replaced by the Leica D-LUX 6, while the M Typ 240 was followed by the Leica M Typ 262. So what is the bottom line? Is there a clear favorite between the Leica D-LUX 5 and the Leica M Typ 240? Which camera is better? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.
Advantages of the Leica D-LUX 5:

Hence, the decision which camera is best and worth buying is often a very personal one.
