Kodak S-1 vs Nikon P1000
The Kodak PixPro S-1 and the Nikon Coolpix P1000 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in January 2012 and July 2018. The S-1 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the P1000 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a Four Thirds (S-1) and a 1/2.3-inch (P1000) sensor. The Kodak has a resolution of 16.1 megapixels, whereas the Nikon provides 15.9 MP.

Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Kodak S-1 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Nikon P1000 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the P1000 is 88 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 5.6. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.
With 16.1MP, the S-1 offers a slightly higher resolution than the P1000 (15.9MP), but the S-1 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.74μm versus 1.33μm for the P1000) due to its larger sensor. However, the P1000 is a much more recent model (by 6 years and 5 months) than the S-1, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the P1000 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The Kodak PixPro S-1 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 12800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Nikon Coolpix P1000 are ISO 100 to ISO 6400 (no boost).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the P1000 provides a better video resolution than the S-1. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Kodak is limited to 1080/30p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The P1000 has one, while the S-1 does not. It is notable that the P1000 has a microphone port, which can help to improve the quality of audio recordings by attaching an external microphone. The S-1 does not feature such a mic input.
The P1000 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Nikon. In contrast, the S-1 has been discontinued (but can be found pre-owned on eBay).
