The Hasselblad X1D-50c and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 III are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in June 2016 and March 2016. The X1D is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the RX10 III is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a medium format (X1D) and an one-inch (RX10 III) sensor. The Hasselblad has a resolution of 51.3 megapixel, whereas the Sony provides 20 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Sony RX10 III is notably smaller (15 percent) than the Hasselblad X1D. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The RX10 III was launched at a lower price than the X1D, despite having a lens build in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Hasselblad X1D vs Sony RX10 III

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Hasselblad X1D features a medium format sensor and the Sony RX10 III an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the RX10 III is 92 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 0.79 and 2.7. The sensor in the X1D has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the RX10 III offers a 3:2 aspect.

With 51.3MP, the X1D offers a higher resolution than the RX10 III (20MP), but the X1D nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.30μm versus 2.41μm for the RX10 III) due to its larger sensor. It is noteworthy in this context that the two cameras were released in close succession, so that their sensors are from the same technological generation. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X1D has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Of the two cameras under review, the X1D provides substantially higher image quality than the RX10 III, with an overall score that is 32 points higher. This advantage is based on 3.1 bits higher color depth, 2.2 EV in additional dynamic range, and 3.2 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the RX10 III provides a better video resolution than the X1D. One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The X1D has a touchscreen, while the RX10 III has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the RX10 III features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

The X1D writes its imaging data to SDXC cards, while the RX10 III uses SDXC or Memory Stick PRO Duo cards. The X1D features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the RX10 III only has one slot.

The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation.
