Hasselblad X1D versus Panasonic LX7

The Hasselblad X1D-50c and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in June 2016 and July 2012. The X1D is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the LX7 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a medium format (X1D) and a 1/1.7-inch (LX7) sensor. The Hasselblad has a resolution of 51.3 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 10 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic LX7 is considerably smaller (49 percent) than the Hasselblad X1D. It is worth mentioning in this context that the X1D is splash and dust resistant, while the LX7 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the LX7 has a lens build in, whereas the X1D is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Attaching the latter will add extra weight and bulk to the setup.

The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The LX7 was launched at a lower price than the X1D, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Hasselblad X1D vs Panasonic LX7

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Hasselblad X1D features a medium format sensor and the Panasonic LX7 a 1/1.7-inch sensor. The sensor area in the LX7 is 97 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 0.79 and 4.65. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3. The LX7 has the particularity of featuring a switch that allows to toggle between different aspect ratios, while maintaining the same field of view and full image resolution.

Hasselblad X1D and Panasonic LX7 sensor measures

With 51.3MP, the X1D offers a higher resolution than the LX7 (10MP), but the X1D nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.30μm versus 2.05μm for the LX7) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the X1D is a somewhat more recent model (by 3 years and 11 months) than the LX7, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X1D has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

X1D versus LX7 MP

For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under review, the X1D provides substantially higher image quality than the LX7, with an overall score that is 52 points higher. This advantage is based on 5.5 bits higher color depth, 3.1 EV in additional dynamic range, and 4.9 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the LX7 provides a faster frame rate than the X1D. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the Hasselblad is limited to 1080/25p.

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the X1D has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), which can be very helpful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the LX7 relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The X1D has a touchscreen, while the LX7 has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

Both the X1D and the LX7 write their imaging data to SDXC cards. The X1D features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the LX7 only has one slot.

The X1D is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Hasselblad. In contrast, the LX7 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the LX7 was succeeded by the Panasonic LX10.

  • Better video: Provides higher movie framerates (1080/60p versus 1080/25p).

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review.
