Hasselblad X1D versus Fujifilm GFX 50S
The Hasselblad X1D-50c and the Fujifilm GFX 50S are two professional cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in June 2016 and September 2016. Both the X1D and the GFX are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are equipped with a medium format sensor. The Hasselblad has a resolution of 51.3 megapixel, whereas the Fujifilm provides 51.1 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm GFX 50S is notably smaller (5 percent) than the Hasselblad X1D. However, the GFX is slightly heavier (2 percent) than the X1D. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Hence, you might want to study the specifications of available lenses in order to get the full picture of the size and weight of the two camera systems.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The GFX was launched at a markedly lower price (by 28 percent) than the X1D, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tent to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Hasselblad X1D features a medium format sensor and the Fujifilm GFX 50S a medium format sensor. The sensor area in the GFX is 1 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 0.79 and 0.79. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.
Despite having a slightly smaller sensor, the Hasselblad X1D offers a higher resolution of 51.3 megapixel, compared with 51.1 MP of the Fujifilm GFX 50S. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 5.30μm versus 5.33μm for the GFX). It is noteworthy in this context that the two cameras were released in close succession, so that their sensors are from the same technological generation. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the GFX provides a faster frame rate than the X1D. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/30p, while the Hasselblad is limited to 1080/25p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the X1D has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), which can be very helpful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the GFX relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. Both the X1D and the GFX are current models that good online retailers will have in stock. You can check the latest prices, for example, at amazon. Neither of the two has a direct predecessor, so perhaps they will constitute the origins of new camera lines for Hasselblad and Fujifilm.
So what conclusions can be drawn? Which of the two cameras – the Hasselblad X1D or the Fujifilm GFX 50S – has the upper hand? The listing below highlights the relative strengths of the two models.
Reasons to prefer the Hasselblad X1D-50c:
- Easier framing: Has an electronic viewfinder for image framing and settings control.
- More prestigious: Has the Hasselblad luxury appeal, which ensures a high resale price.
Advantages of the Fujifilm GFX 50S:

However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs.
In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the X1D or the GFX handle or perform in practice. The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
