Hasselblad X1D versus Canon 6D Mark II

The Hasselblad X1D-50c and the Canon EOS 6D Mark II are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in June 2016 and June 2017. The X1D is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the 6D Mark II is a DSLR. The cameras are based on a medium format (X1D) and a full frame (6D Mark II) sensor. The Hasselblad has a resolution of 51.3 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 26 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 6D Mark II is notably larger (9 percent) than the Hasselblad X1D. Moreover, the 6D Mark II is markedly heavier (6 percent) than the X1D. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The 6D Mark II was launched at a markedly lower price (by 78 percent) than the X1D, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.


Sensor comparison: Hasselblad X1D vs Canon 6D Mark II

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Hasselblad X1D features a medium format sensor and the Canon 6D Mark II a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the 6D Mark II is 40 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 0.79 and 1.0. The sensor in the X1D has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the 6D Mark II offers a 3:2 aspect.

With 51.3MP, the X1D offers a higher resolution than the 6D Mark II (26MP), but the X1D has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.30μm versus 5.76μm for the 6D Mark II). Moreover, the 6D Mark II is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year) than the X1D, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X1D has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under review, the X1D provides substantially higher image quality than the 6D Mark II, with an overall score that is 17 points higher. This advantage is based on 1.8 bits higher color depth, 2.9 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.6 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the 6D Mark II provides a faster frame rate than the X1D. Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning.
