Fujifilm XP140 vs Leica X Typ 113
The Fujifilm FinePix XP140 and the Leica X (Typ 113) are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in February 2019 and September 2014. Both the XP140 and the X Typ 113 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on a 1/2.3-inch (XP140) and an APS-C (X Typ 113) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 15.9 megapixels, whereas the Leica provides 16.1 MP.

Moreover, the X Typ 113 is substantially heavier (135 percent) than the XP140. Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The XP140 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 90 percent) than the X Typ 113, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm XP140 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Leica X Typ 113 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the X Typ 113 is 1221 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 1.5. The sensor in the XP140 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the X Typ 113 offers a 3:2 aspect.
With 16.1MP, the X Typ 113 offers a higher resolution than the XP140 (15.9MP), but the X Typ 113 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.79μm versus 1.33μm for the XP140) due to its larger sensor. However, the XP140 is a much more recent model (by 4 years and 4 months) than the X Typ 113, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the XP140 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The Fujifilm FinePix XP140 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 12800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Leica X (Typ 113) are ISO 100 to ISO 12500 (no boost).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the XP140 provides a higher video resolution than the X Typ 113. It can shoot video footage at 4K/15p, while the Leica is limited to 1080/30p.

The Fujifilm XP140 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.
The XP140 is equipped with a zoom lens, while the X Typ 113 comes with a built-in prime. The XP140 has a 28-140mm f/3.9-4.9 optic and the X Typ 113 offers a 35mm f/1.7 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). It is notable that the XP140 offers wifi support, while the X Typ 113 does not. Wifi can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location.
The XP140 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Fujifilm. In contrast, the X Typ 113 has been discontinued (but can be found pre-owned on eBay). There has not been a direct replacement model for the X Typ 113 from Leica.
