Fujifilm XP120 vs Leica M8
The Fujifilm FinePix XP120 and the Leica M8 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in January 2017 and September 2006. The XP120 is a fixed lens compact, while the M8 is a rangefinder-focusing mirrorless. The cameras are based on a 1/2.3-inch (XP120) and an APS-H (M8) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 15.9 megapixels, whereas the Leica provides 10.4 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica M8 is notably larger (42 percent) than the Fujifilm XP120. It is worth mentioning in this context that the XP120 is splash and dust resistant, while the M8 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing. More than that, the XP120 is water-proof up to 20m and can, thus, be used for underwater photography.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the XP120 has a lens built in, whereas the M8 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The XP120 was launched at a lower price than the M8, despite having a lens built in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm XP120 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Leica M8 an APS-H sensor. The sensor area in the M8 is 1636 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 1.3. The sensor in the XP120 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the M8 offers a 3:2 aspect.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the Fujifilm XP120 offers a higher resolution of 15.9 megapixels, compared with 10.4 MP of the Leica M8. This megapixels advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 1.33μm versus 6.84μm for the M8). However, it should be noted that the XP120 is much more recent (by 10 years and 3 months) than the M8, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm XP120 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the XP120 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 23 x 17.3 inches or 58.5 x 43.9 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 18.4 x 13.8 inches or 46.8 x 35.1 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 15.4 x 11.5 inches or 39 x 29.3 cm. The corresponding values for the Leica M8 are 19.7 x 13.2 inches or 50 x 33.4 cm for good quality, 15.7 x 10.5 inches or 40 x 26.7 cm for very good quality, and 13.1 x 8.8 inches or 33.3 x 22.3 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Fujifilm FinePix XP120 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 3200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Leica M8 are ISO 160 to ISO 2500 (no boost).
In terms of underlying technology, the XP120 is build around a BSI-CMOS sensor, while the M8 uses a CCD imager. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The XP120 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the M8 does not. The highest resolution format that the XP120 can use is 1080/60p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The XP120 has one, while the M8 does not. While the built-in flash of the XP120 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.
The Fujifilm XP120 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.

It is notable that the XP120 offers wifi support, while the M8 does not. Wifi can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location.
Both the XP120 and the M8 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on ebay. The M8 was replaced by the Leica M9, while the XP120 was followed by the Fujifilm XP130.
