Fujifilm XF10 vs XQ1

The Fujifilm XF10 and the Fujifilm XQ1 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in July 2018 and October 2013. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm XQ1 is notably smaller (18 percent) than the Fujifilm XF10. Moreover, the XQ1 is markedly lighter (26 percent) than the XF10. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the XF10 nor the XQ1 are weather-sealed.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The two cameras under review were launched at the same price and fall into the same market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm XF10 features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm XQ1 a 2/3 sensor. The sensor area in the XQ1 is 84 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 3.9. The sensor in the XF10 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the XQ1 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 24MP, the XF10 offers a higher resolution than the XQ1 (12MP), but the XF10 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 2.20μm for the XQ1) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the XF10 is a much more recent model (by 4 years and 9 months) than the XQ1, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the XQ1 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm XF10 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the XF10 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 30 x 20 inch or 76.2 x 50.8 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 24 x 16 inch or 61 x 40.6 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 20 x 13.3 inch or 50.8 x 33.9 cm. The corresponding values for the Fujifilm XQ1 are 20 x 15 inch or 50.8 x 38.1 cm for good quality, 16 x 12 inch or 40.6 x 30.5 cm for very good quality, and 13.3 x 10 inch or 33.9 x 25.4 cm for excellent quality prints.

The Fujifilm XF10 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 12800, which can be extended to ISO 100-51200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm XQ1 are ISO 100 to ISO 12800 (no boost).

XF10 versus XQ1 MP

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the XF10 provides a higher video resolution than the XQ1. It can shoot video footage at 4K/15p, while the XQ1 is limited to 1080/60p.

One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The XF10 has a touchscreen, while the XQ1 has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, the XF10 is one of those camera that have an additional electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).

The Fujifilm XF10 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.

The XQ1 is equipped with a zoom lens, while the XF10 comes with a built-in prime. The XQ1 has a 25-100mm f/1.8-4.9 optic and the XF10 offers a 28mm f/2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the XQ1 provides a wider angle of view at the short end, as well as more tele-photo reach at the long end than the XF10. The XQ1 offers the faster maximum aperture.

Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the XF10 and the XQ1 write their files to SDXC cards. Both cameras can use UHS-I cards, which provide for Ultra High Speed data transfer of up to 104 MB/s.

It is notable that the XF10 has a microphone port, which is missing on the XQ1. Such an external microphone input can help to substantially improve the quality of audio recordings when a good external microphone is used.

The XF10 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Fujifilm. In contrast, the XQ1 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay).
