Fujifilm X70 versus Fujifilm X20

The Fujifilm X70 and the Fujifilm X20 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in January 2016 and January 2013. Both the X70 and the X20 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an APS-C (X70) and a 2/3 (X20) sensor. The X70 has a resolution of 16 megapixel, whereas the X20 provides 12 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X20 is notably larger (13 percent) than the Fujifilm X70. Moreover, the X20 is slightly heavier (4 percent) than the X70. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X70 nor the X20 are weather-sealed.

Concerning battery life, the X70 gets 330 shots out of its NP-95 battery, while the X20 can take 270 images on a single charge of its NP-50 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X20 was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 25 percent) than the X70, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.


Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X70 vs Fujifilm X20

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X70 features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm X20 a 2/3 sensor. The sensor area in the X20 is 84 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 3.9. The sensor in the X70 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the X20 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 16MP, the X70 offers a higher resolution than the X20 (12MP), but the X70 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.80μm versus 2.20μm for the X20) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the X70 is a somewhat more recent model (by 3 years) than the X20, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

The X20 is equipped with a zoom lens, while the X70 comes with a build-in prime. The X20 has a 28-112mm f/2.0-2.8 optic and the X70 offers a 28mm f/2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the X70 and X20 provide the same view at the wide-angle end, but the X20 has less tele-photo reach at the long end. The X20 offers the faster maximum aperture.

The X70 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the X20 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the X20 was succeeded by the Fujifilm X30.

Reasons to prefer the Fujifilm X70:
