Fujifilm X70 versus Fujifilm X100T

The Fujifilm X70 and the Fujifilm X100T are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in January 2016 and September 2014. Both the X70 and the X100T are fixed lens compact cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 16 megapixel.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X100T is notably larger (30 percent) than the Fujifilm X70. Moreover, the X100T is markedly heavier (29 percent) than the X70. Cameras intended for semi-professional or professional use tend to be a bit bulkier in order to give them the necessary ruggedness. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X70 nor the X100T are weather-sealed.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X70 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 38 percent) than the X100T, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tent to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.5. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Sensor size

The two cameras under review do not only share the same sensor size, but also offer an identical resolution of 16 megapixel. This similarity in sensor specs implies that both the X70 and the X100T have the same pixel density, as well as the same pixel size. It should, however, be noted that the X70 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 4 months) than the X100T, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, and both provide the same movie specifications (1080/60p).

Both the X70 and the X100T have build-in prime lenses. The X70 has a 28mm f/2.8 optic and the X100T offers a 35mm f/2.0 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the X70 provides a wider angle of view than the X100T. The X100T offers the faster maximum aperture.

The X70 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the X100T has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on ebay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the X100T was succeeded by the Fujifilm X100F.

So how do things add up? Which of the two cameras – the Fujifilm X70 or the Fujifilm X100T – has the upper hand? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.


Reasons to prefer the Fujifilm X70:

  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in January 2016).

However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs.
