Fujifilm X70 versus Fujifilm X-T20
The Fujifilm X70 and the Fujifilm X-T20 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in January 2016 and January 2017. The X70 is a fixed lens compact, while the X-T20 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The X70 has a resolution of 16 megapixel, whereas the X-T20 provides 24 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X-T20 is considerably larger (35 percent) than the Fujifilm X70. Cameras intended for semi-professional or professional use tend to be a bit bulkier in order to give them the necessary ruggedness. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X70 nor the X-T20 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X70 has a lens build in, whereas the X-T20 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X70 was launched at a lower price than the X-T20, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.5. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
While the two cameras under review share the same sensor size, the X-T20 offers a higher resolution of 24 megapixel, compared with 16 MP of the X70. This megapixel advantage translates into a 23 percent gain in linear resolution. On the other hand, these sensor specs imply that the X-T20 has a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.93μm versus 4.82μm for the X70). However, it should be noted that the X-T20 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year) than the X70, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of individual pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the X-T20 provides a better video resolution than the X70. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the X70 is limited to 1080/60p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. So how do things add up? Is there a clear favorite between the Fujifilm X70 and the Fujifilm X70? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.
Arguments in favor of the Fujifilm X70:
- Ready to shoot: Has a lens build-in, whereas the X-T20 requires a separate lens.

The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The ratings are only valid when refering to cameras in the same category and of the same age. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense.
