Fujifilm X30 versus Fujifilm X70

The Fujifilm X30 and the Fujifilm X70 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in August 2014 and January 2016. Both the X30 and the X70 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on a 2/3 (X30) and an APS-C sensor. The X30 has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the X70 provides 16 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X70 is considerably smaller (83 percent) than the Fujifilm X30. Moreover, the X70 is markedly lighter (20 percent) than the X30. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X30 nor the X70 are weather-sealed.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X30 was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 25 percent) than the X70, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tent to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X30 features a 2/3 sensor and the Fujifilm X70 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the X70 is 534 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 3.9 and 1.5. The sensor in the X30 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the X70 offers a 3:2 aspect.

Sensor size

With 16MP, the X70 offers a higher resolution than the X30 (12MP), but the X70 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.80μm versus 2.20μm for the X30) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the X70 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 4 months) than the X30, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, and both provide the same movie specifications (1080/60p).

Feature comparison

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the X30 has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), which can be very helpful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the X70 relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. The X30 is equipped with a zoom lens, while the X70 comes with a build-in prime. The X30 has a 28-112mm f/2.0-2.8 optic and the X70 offers a 28mm f/2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the X30 and X70 provide the same view at the wide-angle end, but the X70 has less tele-photo reach at the long end. The X30 offers the faster maximum aperture.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Is there a clear favorite between the Fujifilm X30 and the Fujifilm X30? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.


Arguments in favor of the Fujifilm X30:

User reviews, such as those found at amazon, can sometimes inform about these issues, but such feedback is often incomplete, inconsistent, and biased. This is where reviews by experts come in.
