Fujifilm X20 versus Canon G1 X Mark II

The Fujifilm X20 and the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in January 2013 and February 2014. Both the X20 and the G1X Mark II are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on a 2/3 (X20) and an 1.5-inch (G1X Mark II) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 13 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G1 X Mark II is somewhat larger (5 percent) than the Fujifilm X20. Moreover, the G1X Mark II is substantially heavier (57 percent) than the X20. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X20 nor the G1X Mark II are weather-sealed.

Concerning battery life, the X20 gets 270 shots out of its NP-50 battery, while the G1X Mark II can take 240 images on a single charge of its NB-12L power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X20 was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 25 percent) than the G1X Mark II, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X20 vs Canon G1 X Mark II

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X20 features a 2/3 sensor and the Canon G1 X Mark II an 1.5-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G1X Mark II is 352 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 3.9 and 1.85. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.

Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors.

Fujifilm X20 and Canon G1 X Mark II sensor measures

With 13MP, the G1X Mark II offers a higher resolution than the X20 (12MP), but the G1X Mark II nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.49μm versus 2.20μm for the X20) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the G1X Mark II is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 1 month) than the X20, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X20 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the X20 provides a higher frame rate than the G1X Mark II. It can shoot video footage at 1080/60p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/30p.

One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The G1X Mark II has a touchscreen, while the X20 has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

Both the X20 and the G1X Mark II have zoom lenses build in. The X20 has a 28-112mm f/2.0-2.8 optic and the G1X Mark II offers a 24-120mm f/2.0-3.9 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Canon provides a wider angle of view at the short end, as well as more tele-photo reach at the long end than the Fujifilm. Both cameras offer the same maximum aperture.

Both the X20 and the G1X Mark II write their imaging data to SDXC cards.

The G1X Mark II is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the X20 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the X20 was succeeded by the Fujifilm X30.
