Fujifilm X100T versus Leica X1

The Fujifilm X100T and the Leica X1 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2014 and September 2009. Both the X100T and the X1 are fixed lens compact cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 16 megapixel, whereas the Leica provides 12.2 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica X1 is notably smaller (21 percent) than the Fujifilm X100T. Moreover, the X1 is markedly lighter (30 percent) than the X100T. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X100T nor the X1 are weather-sealed.

Concerning battery life, the X100T gets 330 shots out of its NP-95 battery, while the X1 can take 260 images on a single charge of its BP-DC8 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The X100T was launched at a markedly lower price (by 35 percent) than the X1, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X100T vs Leica X1

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the X1 is 1 percent bigger. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.

Fujifilm X100T and Leica X1 sensor measures

Despite having a slightly smaller sensor, the Fujifilm X100T offers a higher resolution of 16 megapixel, compared with 12.2 MP of the Leica X1. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 4.80μm versus 5.51μm for the X1). However, it should be noted that the X100T is much more recent (by 5 years) than the X1, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X100T has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The X100T has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in relatively fast and reliable autofocus acquisition during video recording.

X100T versus X1 MP

For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The X100T indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the X1 does not. The highest resolution format that the X100T can use is 1080/60p.

Both the X100T and the X1 have build-in prime lenses. The X100T has a 35mm f/2.0 optic and the X1 offers a 36mm f/2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Fujifilm provides a wider angle of view than the Leica. The X100T offers the faster maximum aperture.

The X100T writes its imaging data to SDXC cards, while the X1 uses SDHC cards.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review.
