Fujifilm X100F versus Fujifilm X-T2

The Fujifilm X100F and the Fujifilm X-T2 are two enthusiast cameras that were announced, respectively, in January 2017 and July 2016. The X100F is a fixed lens compact, while the X-T2 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 24 megapixel. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X-T2 is notably larger (28 percent) than the Fujifilm X100F. It is noteworthy in this context that the X-T2 is splash and dust-proof, while the X100F does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X100F was launched at a lower price than the X-T2, despite having a lens build in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X100F vs Fujifilm X-T2

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.5. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

The two cameras under review do not only share the same sensor size, but also offer an identical resolution of 24 megapixel. This similarity in sensor specs implies that both the X100F and the X-T2 have the same pixel density, as well as the same pixel size. It should, however, be noted that the X100F is a somewhat more recent model (by 6 months) than the X-T2, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the X-T2 provides a better video resolution than the X100F. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the X100F is limited to 1080/60p.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Which of the two cameras – the Fujifilm X100F or the Fujifilm X-T2 – has the upper hand? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.


Advantages of the Fujifilm X100F:

  • Ready to shoot: Has a lens build-in, whereas the X-T2 requires a separate lens.
  • More compact: Is smaller (127x75mm vs 133x92mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.
  • Less heavy: Is lighter even though it comes with a build-in lens (unlike the X-T2).
  • Longer lasting: Can take more shots (390 versus 340) on a single battery charge.

  • Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (14 vs 8 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
  • More flexible: Takes interchangeable lenses and can thus be used with specialty optics.
  • Better sealing: Is splash and dust sealed for shooting in inclement weather conditions.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in July 2016).
