The Fujifilm X100F and the Fujifilm X-H1 are two enthusiast cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in January 2017 and February 2018. The X100F is a fixed lens compact, while the X-H1 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 24 megapixel. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X-H1 is considerably larger (43 percent) than the Fujifilm X100F. It is noteworthy in this context that the X-H1 is splash and dust-proof, while the X100F does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X100F was launched at a lower price than the X-H1, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X100F vs Fujifilm X-H1

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.5. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Technology-wise, the X-H1 uses a more advanced image processing engine (X-Processor Pro2) than the X100F (X-Processor Pro), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

The two cameras under review do not only share the same sensor size, but also offer an identical resolution of 24 megapixel. This similarity in sensor specs implies that both the X100F and the X-H1 have the same pixel density, as well as the same pixel size. It should, however, be noted that the X-H1 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year) than the X100F, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the X-H1 provides a better video resolution than the X100F. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the X100F is limited to 1080/60p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The X100F has one, while the X-H1 does not. While the build-in flash of the X100F is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the X-H1 features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

Both the X100F and the X-H1 write their imaging data to SDXC cards. The X-H1 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the X100F only has one slot.

However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features before making a decision on a new camera.
