Fujifilm X100F versus Canon G5 X

The Fujifilm X100F and the Canon PowerShot G5 X are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in January 2017 and October 2015. Both the X100F and the G5X are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an APS-C (X100F) and an one-inch (G5X) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 20 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G5 X is notably smaller (11 percent) than the Fujifilm X100F. Moreover, the G5X is markedly lighter (25 percent) than the X100F. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X100F nor the G5X are weather-sealed.

Concerning battery life, the X100F gets 390 shots out of its NP-W126S battery, while the G5X can take 210 images on a single charge of its NB-13L power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The G5X was launched at a markedly lower price (by 38 percent) than the X100F, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X100F vs Canon G5 X

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X100F features an APS-C sensor and the Canon G5 X an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G5X is 68 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 2.7. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

With 24MP, the X100F offers a higher resolution than the G5X (20MP), but the X100F nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 2.41μm for the G5X) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the X100F is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 3 months) than the G5X, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X100F has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The G5X is equipped with a zoom lens, while the X100F comes with a build-in prime. The G5X has a 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8 optic and the X100F offers a 35mm f/2.0 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Canon provides a wider angle of view at the short end, as well as more tele-photo reach at the long end than the Fujifilm. The G5X offers the faster maximum aperture.
