Fujifilm X100 vs Panasonic LF1

The Fujifilm FinePix X100 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LF1 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2010 and April 2013. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic LF1 is considerably smaller (32 percent) than the Fujifilm X100. Moreover, the LF1 is substantially lighter (57 percent) than the X100. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X100 nor the LF1 are weather-sealed.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The LF1 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 58 percent) than the X100, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X100 features an APS-C sensor and the Panasonic LF1 a 1/1.7-inch sensor. The sensor area in the LF1 is 88 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 4.5. The sensor in the X100 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the LF1 offers a 4:3 aspect.

Fujifilm X100 and Panasonic LF1 sensor measures

With 12.2MP, the X100 offers a slightly higher resolution than the LF1 (12MP), but the X100 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.53μm versus 1.89μm for the LF1) due to its larger sensor. However, the LF1 is a much more recent model (by 2 years and 7 months) than the X100, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

The Fujifilm FinePix X100 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 6400, which can be extended to ISO 100-12800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LF1 are ISO 80 to ISO 6400, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 80-12800.

X100 versus LF1 MP

For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under review, the X100 provides substantially higher image quality than the LF1, with an overall score that is 21 points higher. This advantage is based on 2.1 bits higher color depth, 0.8 EV in additional dynamic range, and 2.2 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the LF1 provides a better video resolution than the X100. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60i, while the Fujifilm is limited to 720/30p.

The LF1 is equipped with a zoom lens, while the X100 comes with a built-in prime. The LF1 has a 28-200mm f/2.0-5.9 optic and the X100 offers a 35mm f/2.0 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Panasonic provides a wider angle of view at the short end, as well as more tele-photo reach at the long end than the Fujifilm. Both cameras offer the same maximum aperture.

Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the X100 and the LF1 write their files to SDXC cards.

It is notable that the X100 has a hotshoe, while the LF1 does not. This socket makes it possible to easily attach optional accessories, such as an external flash gun.

The LF1 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Panasonic. In contrast, the X100 has been discontinued (but can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the X100 was succeeded by the Fujifilm X100S.
