Body comparison: Fujifilm X-T3 vs Canon 450D

The physical size and weight of the Fujifilm X-T3 and the Canon 450D are illustrated in the side-by-side display below. The two cameras are presented according to their relative size. Three consecutive perspectives from the front, the top, and the back are available. All width, height and depth dimensions are rounded to the nearest millimeter.

The X-T3 can be obtained in two different colors (black, silver), while the 450D is only available in black.

Compare X-T3 or 450D rear

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 450D is somewhat larger (2 percent) than the Fujifilm X-T3. However, the 450D is slightly lighter (3 percent) than the X-T3. It is worth mentioning in this context that the X-T3 is splash and dust resistant, while the 450D does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Both cameras have similarly sized sensors, but DSLRs have a larger flange-to-focal plane distance than mirrorless cameras, which imposes contraints on the optical engineering process and generally leads to bigger and heavier lenses. You can compare the optics available for the two cameras in the Fujinon X Lens Catalog (X-T3) and the Canon EF Lens Catalog (450D). Mirrorless cameras, such as the Fujifilm X-T3, have moreover the advantage that they have a relatively short flange to focal plane distance and can thus use many lenses from other systems via adapters.

Concerning battery life, the X-T3 gets 390 shots out of its NP-W126S battery, while the 450D can take 500 images on a single charge of its LP-E5 power pack. The power pack in the X-T3 can be charged via the USB port, so that it is not always necessary to take the battery charger along when travelling.

The following table provides a synthesis of the main physical specifications of the two cameras and other similar ones. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The 450D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 47 percent) than the X-T3, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-T3 vs Canon 450D

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the 450D is 10 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have format factors, respectively, of 1.5 (X-T3) and 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Fujifilm X-T3 and Canon 450D sensor measures

With 26MP, the X-T3 offers a higher resolution than the 450D (12.2MP), but the X-T3 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.76μm versus 5.19μm for the 450D). However, the X-T3 is a somewhat more recent model (by 10 years and 7 months) than the 450D, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X-T3 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The X-T3 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during video recording.

The Fujifilm X-T3 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 160 to ISO 12800, which can be extended to ISO 80-51200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS 450D are ISO 100 to ISO 1600 (no boost).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The X-T3 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the 450D does not. The highest resolution format that the X-T3 can use is 4K/60p.

Feature comparison: Fujifilm X-T3 vs Canon 450D

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the X-T3 has an electronic viewfinder (3690k dots), while the 450D has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. The viewfinder in the X-T3 offers a wider field of view (100%) than the one in the 450D (95%), so that a larger proportion of the captured image is visible in the finder. In addition, the viewfinder of the X-T3 has a higher magnification (0.75x vs 0.54x), so that the size of the image transmitted appears closer to the size seen with the naked human eye. The adjacent table lists some of the other core features of the Fujifilm X-T3 and Canon 450D along with similar information for a selection of comparators.

One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The X-T3 has a touchscreen, while the 450D has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, the X-T3 is one of those camera that have an additional electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).

The Fujifilm X-T3 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.

The X-T3 writes its imaging data to SDXC cards, while the 450D uses SDHC cards. The X-T3 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the 450D only has one slot. The X-T3 supports UHS-II cards (on both slots), while the 450D cannot take advantage of Ultra High Speed SD cards.

It is notable that the X-T3 offers wifi support, while the 450D does not. Wifi can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Fujifilm X-T3 (unlike the 450D) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.

The X-T3 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Fujifilm. In contrast, the 450D has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the 450D was succeeded by the Canon 500D. Further information on the two cameras, as well as related accessories, can be found on the official Fujifilm and Canon websites.

Notes: ++) highly recommended; +) recommended; o) reviewed; -) not available.

The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The ratings are only valid when referring to cameras in the same category and of the same age. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning. It should also be noted that some of the review sites have over time altered the way they render their verdicts.
