Fujifilm X-T2 versus Fujifilm X100S

The Fujifilm X-T2 and the Fujifilm X100S are two enthusiast cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in July 2016 and January 2013. The X-T2 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the X100S is a fixed lens compact. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The X-T2 has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the X100S provides 16 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X100S is notably smaller (23 percent) than the Fujifilm X-T2. It is worth mentioning in this context that the X-T2 is splash and dust resistant, while the X100S does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X100S has a lens build in, whereas the X-T2 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the X-T2 gets 340 shots out of its NP-W126S battery, while the X100S can take 330 images on a single charge of its NP-95 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X100S was launched at a lower price than the X-T2, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.


Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-T2 vs Fujifilm X100S

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.5. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

While the two cameras under review share the same sensor size, the X-T2 offers a higher resolution of 24 megapixel, compared with 16 MP of the X100S. This megapixel advantage translates into a 23 percent gain in linear resolution. On the other hand, these sensor specs imply that the X-T2 has a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 4.80μm for the X100S). In this context, it should be noted, however, that the X-T2 is much more recent (by 3 years and 5 months) than the X100S, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that compensate for the smaller pixel size. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the X-T2 provides a higher video resolution than the X100S. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the X100S is limited to 1080/60p.

The X-T2 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the X100S has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the X100S was succeeded by the Fujifilm X100T.

So how do things add up? Is the Fujifilm X-T2 better than the Fujifilm X100S or vice versa? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
