Fujifilm X-Pro1 vs Panasonic G10
The Fujifilm X-Pro1 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G10 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in January 2012 and March 2010. Both the X-Pro1 and the G10 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on an APS-C (X-Pro1) and a Four Thirds (G10) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 16 megapixels, whereas the Panasonic provides 12 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic G10 is notably smaller (9 percent) than the Fujifilm X-Pro1. Moreover, the G10 is markedly lighter (14 percent) than the X-Pro1. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-Pro1 nor the G10 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The G10 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 71 percent) than the X-Pro1, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-Pro1 features an APS-C sensor and the Panasonic G10 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the G10 is 39 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 2.0. The sensor in the X-Pro1 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the G10 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 16MP, the X-Pro1 offers a higher resolution than the G10 (12MP), but the X-Pro1 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.80μm versus 4.33μm for the G10) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the X-Pro1 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 10 months) than the G10, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X-Pro1 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm X-Pro1 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the X-Pro1 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 24.5 x 16.3 inches or 62.2 x 41.5 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 19.6 x 13.1 inches or 49.7 x 33.2 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 16.3 x 10.9 inches or 41.5 x 27.6 cm. The corresponding values for the Panasonic G10 are 20 x 15 inches or 50.8 x 38.1 cm for good quality, 16 x 12 inches or 40.6 x 30.5 cm for very good quality, and 13.3 x 10 inches or 33.9 x 25.4 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Fujifilm X-Pro1 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 6400, which can be extended to ISO 100-25600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G10 are ISO 100 to ISO 6400 (no boost).

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the X-Pro1 provides a higher video resolution than the G10. It can shoot video footage at 1080/24p, while the Panasonic is limited to 720/30p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The G10 has one, while the X-Pro1 does not. While the built-in flash of the G10 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.
Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the X-Pro1 and the G10 write their files to SDXC cards. The X-Pro1 supports UHS-I cards (Ultra High Speed data transfer of up to 104 MB/s), while the G10 cannot take advantage of Ultra High Speed SD cards.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Fujifilm X-Pro1 (unlike the G10) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
Both the X-Pro1 and the G10 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The G10 was replaced by the Panasonic G3, while the X-Pro1 was followed by the Fujifilm X-Pro2.
