Fujifilm X-M1 vs XQ2

The Fujifilm X-M1 and the Fujifilm XQ2 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in June 2013 and January 2015. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm XQ2 is notably smaller (25 percent) than the Fujifilm X-M1. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-M1 nor the XQ2 are weather-sealed.

Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The XQ2 was launched at a lower price than the X-M1, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-M1 features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm XQ2 a 2/3 sensor. The sensor area in the XQ2 is 84 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 3.9. The sensor in the X-M1 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the XQ2 offers a 4:3 aspect.

Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors.

With 16MP, the X-M1 offers a higher resolution than the XQ2 (12MP), but the X-M1 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.80μm versus 2.20μm for the XQ2) due to its larger sensor. However, the XQ2 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 6 months) than the X-M1, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm X-M1 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the X-M1 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 24.5 x 16.3 inch or 62.2 x 41.5 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 19.6 x 13.1 inch or 49.7 x 33.2 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 16.3 x 10.9 inch or 41.5 x 27.6 cm. The corresponding values for the Fujifilm XQ2 are 20 x 15 inch or 50.8 x 38.1 cm for good quality, 16 x 12 inch or 40.6 x 30.5 cm for very good quality, and 13.3 x 10 inch or 33.9 x 25.4 cm for excellent quality prints.

The XQ2 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.

The Fujifilm X-M1 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 6400, which can be extended to ISO 100-25600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm XQ2 are ISO 100 to ISO 12800 (no boost).

X-M1 versus XQ2 MP

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the XQ2 provides a faster frame rate than the X-M1. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the X-M1 is limited to 1080/30p.

Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the X-M1 and the XQ2 write their files to SDXC cards. Both cameras can use UHS-I cards, which provide for Ultra High Speed data transfer of up to 104 MB/s.

It is notable that the X-M1 has a hotshoe, while the XQ2 does not. This socket makes it possible to easily attach optional accessories, such as an external flash gun.

The XQ2 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Fujifilm. In contrast, the X-M1 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). There has not been a direct replacement model for the X-M1 from Fujifilm.
