Fujifilm X-M1 vs X-A3

The Fujifilm X-M1 and the Fujifilm X-A3 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in June 2013 and August 2016. In this particular case, the Fujifilm X-M1 and the Fujifilm X-A3 have exactly the same width and height, and, thus, have identically-sized bodies. However, the X-A3 is slightly heavier (3 percent) than the X-M1. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-M1 nor the X-A3 are weather-sealed.

Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The X-A3 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 43 percent) than the X-M1, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-M1 vs X-A3

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors.

Fujifilm X-M1 and Fujifilm X-A3 sensor measures

With 24MP, the X-A3 offers a higher resolution than the X-M1 (16MP), but the X-A3 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 4.80μm for the X-M1). Yet, the X-A3 is a much more recent model (by 3 years and 2 months) than the X-M1, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X-M1 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The Fujifilm X-M1 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 6400, which can be extended to ISO 100-25600.. The Fujifilm X-A3 offers exactly the same ISO settings.

X-M1 versus X-A3 MP

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the X-A3 provides a faster frame rate than the X-M1. One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The X-A3 has a touchscreen, while the X-M1 has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

The X-A3 has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in taking selfies. In contrast, the X-M1 does not have a selfie-screen.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the X-A3 features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).

Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the X-M1 and the X-A3 write their files to SDXC cards.

Both the X-M1 and the X-A3 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The X-A3 was replaced by the Fujifilm X-A5, while the X-M1 does not have a direct successor.
