Fujifilm X-M1 versus Fujifilm GFX 50R

The Fujifilm X-M1 and the Fujifilm GFX 50R are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in June 2013 and September 2018. Both the X-M1 and the GFX 50R are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on an APS-C (X-M1) and a medium format (GFX 50R) sensor. The X-M1 has a resolution of 16 megapixel, whereas the GFX 50R provides 51.1 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm GFX 50R is considerably larger (99 percent) than the Fujifilm X-M1. Moreover, the GFX 50R is substantially heavier (135 percent) than the X-M1. It is noteworthy in this context that the GFX 50R is splash and dust-proof, while the X-M1 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The X-M1 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 84 percent) than the GFX 50R, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-M1 vs Fujifilm GFX 50R

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-M1 features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm GFX 50R a medium format sensor. The sensor area in the GFX 50R is 295 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 0.79. The sensor in the X-M1 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GFX 50R offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 51.1MP, the GFX 50R offers a higher resolution than the X-M1 (16MP), but the GFX 50R nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.33μm versus 4.80μm for the X-M1) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the GFX 50R is a much more recent model (by 5 years and 3 months) than the X-M1, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The X-M1 has one, while the GFX 50R does not. While the build-in flash of the X-M1 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the GFX 50R features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

Both the X-M1 and the GFX 50R write their imaging data to SDXC cards. The GFX 50R features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the X-M1 only has one slot.

The GFX 50R is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Fujifilm. In contrast, the X-M1 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). There has not been a direct replacement model for the X-M1 from Fujifilm.
