Fujifilm X-E3 versus Panasonic GH2

The Fujifilm X-E3 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH2 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in September 2017 and September 2010. Both the X-E3 and the GH2 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on an APS-C (X-E3) and a Four Thirds (GH2) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 15.9 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic GH2 is notably larger (25 percent) than the Fujifilm X-E3. Moreover, the GH2 is markedly heavier (31 percent) than the X-E3. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-E3 nor the GH2 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. Mirrorless cameras, such as the two under consideration, have the additional advantage of having a short flange to focal plane distance, which makes it possible to mount many lenses from other systems onto the camera via adapters.

Concerning battery life, the X-E3 gets 350 shots out of its NP-W126S battery, while the GH2 can take 330 images on a single charge of its DMW-BLC12 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The X-E3 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 40 percent) than the GH2, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-E3 vs Panasonic GH2

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-E3 features an APS-C sensor and the Panasonic GH2 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the GH2 is 39 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 2.0. The sensor in the X-E3 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GH2 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 24MP, the X-E3 offers a higher resolution than the GH2 (15.9MP), but the X-E3 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 3.76μm for the GH2) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the X-E3 is a somewhat more recent model (by 6 years and 11 months) than the GH2, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X-E3 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the X-E3 provides a higher video resolution than the GH2. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Panasonic is limited to 1080/60i.

The X-E3 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the GH2 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the GH2 was succeeded by the Panasonic GH3.
