Fujifilm X-E3 vs X-Pro3
The Fujifilm X-E3 and the Fujifilm X-Pro3 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in September 2017 and October 2019. Both the X-E3 and the X-Pro3 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The X-E3 has a resolution of 24 megapixels, whereas the X-Pro3 provides 26 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X-Pro3 is notably larger (31 percent) than the Fujifilm X-E3. Moreover, the X-Pro3 is substantially heavier (47 percent) than the X-E3. It is noteworthy in this context that the X-Pro3 is splash and dust-proof, while the X-E3 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X-E3 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 50 percent) than the X-Pro3, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.5. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
Technology-wise, the X-Pro3 uses a more advanced image processing engine (X-Processor 4) than the X-E3 (X-Processor Pro), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.
While the two cameras under review share the same sensor size, the X-Pro3 offers a slightly higher resolution of 26 megapixels, compared with 24 MP of the X-E3. This megapixels advantage translates into a 4 percent gain in linear resolution. On the other hand, these sensor specs imply that the X-Pro3 has a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.76μm versus 3.92μm for the X-E3). However, it should be noted that the X-Pro3 is much more recent (by 2 years and 1 month) than the X-E3, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that compensate for the smaller pixel size. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.
The Fujifilm X-E3 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 12800, which can be extended to ISO 100-51200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm X-Pro3 are ISO 160 to ISO 12800, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 80-51200.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, and both provide the same movie specifications (4K/30p).
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. The two cameras under review are similar with respect to both having an electronic viewfinder. However, the one in the X-Pro3 offers a substantially higher resolution than the one in the X-E3 (3690k vs 2360k dots). The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, both cameras under consideration feature an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).
The Fujifilm X-E3 and the Fujifilm X-Pro3 both have an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.
Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the X-E3 and the X-Pro3 write their files to SDXC cards. The X-Pro3 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the X-E3 only has one slot. The X-Pro3 supports UHS-II cards (on both slots), while the X-E3 can use UHS-I cards.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Fujifilm X-Pro3 (unlike the X-E3) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
Both the X-E3 and the X-Pro3 are recent models that are part of the current product line-up. The X-E3 replaced the earlier Fujifilm X-E2S, while the X-Pro3 followed on from the Fujifilm X-Pro2. Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation.
