Fujifilm X-A5 versus Fujifilm X20

The Fujifilm X-A5 and the Fujifilm X20 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in January 2018 and January 2013. The X-A5 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the X20 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (X-A5) and a 2/3 (X20) sensor. The X-A5 has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the X20 provides 12 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X20 is somewhat larger (3 percent) than the Fujifilm X-A5. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-A5 nor the X20 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X20 has a lens build in, whereas the X-A5 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the X-A5 gets 450 shots out of its NP-W126S battery, while the X20 can take 270 images on a single charge of its NP-50 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-A5 vs Fujifilm X20

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-A5 features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm X20 a 2/3 sensor. The sensor area in the X20 is 84 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 3.9. The sensor in the X-A5 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the X20 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 24MP, the X-A5 offers a higher resolution than the X20 (12MP), but the X-A5 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 2.20μm for the X20) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the X-A5 is a somewhat more recent model (by 5 years) than the X20, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X20 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The X20 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in relatively fast and reliable autofocus acquisition during video recording.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the X-A5 provides a higher video resolution than the X20. It can shoot video footage at 4K/15p, while the X20 is limited to 1080/60p.

One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The X-A5 has a touchscreen, while the X20 has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

The X-A5 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Fujifilm. In contrast, the X20 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the X20 was succeeded by the Fujifilm X30.

  • Ready to shoot: Has an integrated lens, whereas the X-A5 necessitates an extra lens.
  • Less heavy: Has a lower weight even though it has a lens build in (unlike the X-A5).
  • Sharper images: Has stabilization technology build-in to reduce the impact of hand-shake.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in January 2013).

The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review.
