Fujifilm X-A2 vs Nikon P1000
The Fujifilm X-A2 and the Nikon Coolpix P1000 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in January 2015 and July 2018. The X-A2 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the P1000 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (X-A2) and a 1/2.3-inch (P1000) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 16 megapixels, whereas the Nikon provides 15.9 MP.

The X-A2 can be obtained in three different colors (black, brown, white), while the P1000 is only available in black.
If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon P1000 is considerably larger (122 percent) than the Fujifilm X-A2. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-A2 nor the P1000 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the P1000 has a lens built in, whereas the X-A2 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-A2 features an APS-C sensor and the Nikon P1000 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the P1000 is 92 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 5.6. The sensor in the X-A2 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the P1000 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 16MP, the X-A2 offers a slightly higher resolution than the P1000 (15.9MP), but the X-A2 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.80μm versus 1.33μm for the P1000) due to its larger sensor. However, the P1000 is a much more recent model (by 3 years and 5 months) than the X-A2, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the P1000 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The Fujifilm X-A2 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 6400, which can be extended to ISO 100-25600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Nikon Coolpix P1000 are ISO 100 to ISO 6400 (no boost).

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the P1000 provides a better video resolution than the X-A2. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 1080/30p.
Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the P1000 has an electronic viewfinder (2359k dots), which can be very helpful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the X-A2 relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. The Nikon P1000 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.
Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the X-A2 and the P1000 write their files to SDXC cards. Both cameras can use UHS-I cards, which provide for Ultra High Speed data transfer of up to 104 MB/s.

It is notable that the P1000 has a microphone port, which can help to improve the quality of audio recordings by attaching an external microphone. The X-A2 does not feature such a mic input.
The P1000 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Nikon. In contrast, the X-A2 has been discontinued (but can be found pre-owned on eBay). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision. The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings are only valid when referring to cameras in the same category and of the same age.
