Fujifilm GFX 50R versus Panasonic G80

The Fujifilm GFX 50R and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G80 (labelled Panasonic G85 in some countries) are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2018 and September 2016. Both the GFX 50R and the G80 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on a medium format (GFX 50R) and a Four Thirds (G80) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 51.1 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 15.8 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic G80 is notably smaller (27 percent) than the Fujifilm GFX 50R. Moreover, the G80 is substantially lighter (35 percent) than the GFX 50R. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

Concerning battery life, the GFX 50R gets 400 shots out of its NP-T125 battery, while the G80 can take 330 images on a single charge of its DMW-BLC12 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The G80 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 80 percent) than the GFX 50R, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm GFX 50R vs Panasonic G80

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm GFX 50R features a medium format sensor and the Panasonic G80 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the G80 is 85 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 0.79 and 2.0. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.

Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors.

Fujifilm GFX 50R and Panasonic G80 sensor measures

With 51.1MP, the GFX 50R offers a higher resolution than the G80 (15.8MP), but the GFX 50R nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.33μm versus 3.77μm for the G80) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the GFX 50R is a somewhat more recent model (by 2 years) than the G80, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the G80 provides a better video resolution than the GFX 50R. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 1080/30p.

One feature that differentiates the G80 and the GFX 50R is in-body image stabilization (IBIS). The G80 reduces the risk of handshake-induced blur with all attached lenses, while the GFX 50R has to rely on optical image stabilization in OIS-equipped lenses to achieve the same effect.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, both cameras feature an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

Both the GFX 50R and the G80 write their imaging data to SDXC cards. The GFX 50R features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the G80 only has one slot.

  • Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (9 vs 3 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
  • More compact: Is smaller (128x89mm vs 161x97mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
  • Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 270g or 35 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
