Fujifilm GFX 100 vs Panasonic FZ100

The Fujifilm GFX 100 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in May 2019 and July 2010. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic FZ100 is considerably smaller (55 percent) than the Fujifilm GFX 100. It is worth mentioning in this context that the GFX 100 is splash and dust resistant, while the FZ100 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the FZ100 has a lens built in, whereas the GFX 100 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Attaching the latter will add extra weight and bulk to the setup.

Concerning battery life, the GFX 100 gets 800 shots out of its NP-T125 battery, while the FZ100 can take 410 images on a single charge of its DMW-BMB9 power pack. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The FZ100 was launched at a lower price than the GFX 100, despite having a lens built in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm GFX 100 features a medium format sensor and the Panasonic FZ100 a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the FZ100 is 98 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 0.79 and 5.6. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.

With 101.8MP, the GFX 100 offers a higher resolution than the FZ100 (14MP), but the GFX 100 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.76μm versus 1.41μm for the FZ100) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the GFX 100 is a much more recent model (by 8 years and 10 months) than the FZ100, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm GFX 100 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the GFX 100 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 58.2 x 43.7 inch or 147.9 x 110.9 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 46.6 x 34.9 inch or 118.3 x 88.8 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 38.8 x 29.1 inch or 98.6 x 74 cm. The corresponding values for the Panasonic FZ100 are 21.6 x 16.2 inch or 54.9 x 41.1 cm for good quality, 17.3 x 13 inch or 43.9 x 32.9 cm for very good quality, and 14.4 x 10.8 inch or 36.6 x 27.4 cm for excellent quality prints.

The GFX 100 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.

The Fujifilm GFX 100 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 12800, which can be extended to ISO 50-102400. The corresponding ISO settings for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 are ISO 100 to ISO 1600, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-6400.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the GFX 100 provides a higher video resolution than the FZ100. One feature that is present on the GFX 100, but is missing on the FZ100 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

The FZ100 has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in taking selfies. In contrast, the GFX 100 does not have a selfie-screen.

The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, the GFX 100 is one of those camera that have an additional electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).

The Fujifilm GFX 100 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.

Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the GFX 100 and the FZ100 write their files to SDXC cards. The GFX 100 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the FZ100 only has one slot. The GFX 100 supports UHS-II cards (on both slots), while the FZ100 cannot take advantage of Ultra High Speed SD cards.

It is notable that the GFX 100 has a microphone port, which is missing on the FZ100. Such an external microphone input can help to substantially improve the quality of audio recordings when a good external microphone is used.
