Fujifilm GFX 100 vs Olympus E-P3
The Fujifilm GFX 100 and the Olympus PEN E-P3 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in May 2019 and June 2011. Both the GFX 100 and the E-P3 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on a medium format (GFX 100) and a Four Thirds (E-P3) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 101.8 megapixels, whereas the Olympus provides 12.2 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Olympus E-P3 is considerably smaller (63 percent) than the Fujifilm GFX 100. Moreover, the E-P3 is substantially lighter (72 percent) than the GFX 100. It is worth mentioning in this context that the GFX 100 is splash and dust resistant, while the E-P3 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

Concerning battery life, the GFX 100 gets 800 shots out of its NP-T125 battery, while the E-P3 can take 330 images on a single charge of its BLS-5 power pack. The power pack in the GFX 100 can be charged via the USB port, so that it is not always necessary to take the battery charger along when travelling.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The E-P3 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 92 percent) than the GFX 100, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm GFX 100 features a medium format sensor and the Olympus E-P3 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the E-P3 is 84 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 0.79 and 2.0. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.
With 101.8MP, the GFX 100 offers a higher resolution than the E-P3 (12.2MP), but the GFX 100 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.76μm versus 4.29μm for the E-P3). However, the GFX 100 is a much more recent model (by 7 years and 10 months) than the E-P3, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the GFX 100 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm GFX 100 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the GFX 100 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 58.2 x 43.7 inches or 147.9 x 110.9 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 46.6 x 34.9 inches or 118.3 x 88.8 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 38.8 x 29.1 inches or 98.6 x 74 cm. The corresponding values for the Olympus E-P3 are 20.2 x 15.1 inches or 51.2 x 38.4 cm for good quality, 16.1 x 12.1 inches or 41 x 30.7 cm for very good quality, and 13.4 x 10.1 inches or 34.1 x 25.6 cm for excellent quality prints.
The GFX 100 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.
The Fujifilm GFX 100 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 12800, which can be extended to ISO 50-102400. The corresponding ISO settings for the Olympus PEN E-P3 are ISO 200 to ISO 12800 (no boost).
In terms of underlying technology, the GFX 100 is build around a BSI-CMOS sensor, while the E-P3 uses a CMOS imager. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the GFX 100 provides a higher video resolution than the E-P3. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Olympus is limited to 1080/60i.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. The GFX 100 and the E-P3 are similar in the sense that neither of the two has a viewfinder. The images are, thus, framed using live view on the rear LCD. However, optional viewfinders – the EVF-GFX2 for the GFX 100 and the VF-3 for the E-P3 – are available as accessories. One feature that is present on the GFX 100, but is missing on the E-P3 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.
The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, the GFX 100 is one of those camera that have an additional electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).
The Fujifilm GFX 100 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.
Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the GFX 100 and the E-P3 write their files to SDXC cards. The GFX 100 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the E-P3 only has one slot. The GFX 100 supports UHS-II cards (on both slots), while the E-P3 can use UHS-I cards.

It is notable that the GFX 100 has a microphone port, which is missing on the E-P3. Such an external microphone input can help to substantially improve the quality of audio recordings when a good external microphone is used.
