Canon XTi vs Fujifilm GFX 50R
The Canon EOS Rebel XTi (called Canon 400D in some regions) and the Fujifilm GFX 50R are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in August 2006 and September 2018. The XTi is a DSLR, while the GFX 50R is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an APS-C (XTi) and a medium format (GFX 50R) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 10.1 megapixels, whereas the Fujifilm provides 51.1 MP.

Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The XTi was launched at a markedly lower price (by 82 percent) than the GFX 50R, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon XTi features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm GFX 50R a medium format sensor. The sensor area in the GFX 50R is 341 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 0.79. The sensor in the XTi has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GFX 50R offers a 4:3 aspect.
In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.
With 51.1MP, the GFX 50R offers a higher resolution than the XTi (10.1MP), but the GFX 50R has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.33μm versus 5.71μm for the XTi). Yet, the GFX 50R is a much more recent model (by 12 years and 1 month) than the XTi, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the GFX 50R has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm GFX 50R implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the GFX 50R for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 41.3 x 31 inches or 104.9 x 78.6 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 33 x 24.8 inches or 83.9 x 62.9 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 27.5 x 20.6 inches or 69.9 x 52.4 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon XTi are 19.4 x 13 inches or 49.4 x 32.9 cm for good quality, 15.6 x 10.4 inches or 39.5 x 26.3 cm for very good quality, and 13 x 8.6 inches or 32.9 x 21.9 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Canon EOS Rebel XTi has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 1600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm GFX 50R are ISO 100 to ISO 12800, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 50-102400.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The GFX 50R indeed provides for movie recording, while the XTi does not. The highest resolution format that the GFX 50R can use is 1080/30p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the GFX 50R has an electronic viewfinder (3690k dots), while the XTi has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. The viewfinder in the GFX 50R offers a wider field of view (100%) than the one in the XTi (95%), so that a larger proportion of the captured image is visible in the finder. In addition, the viewfinder of the GFX 50R has a higher magnification (0.77x vs 0.49x), so that the size of the image transmitted appears closer to the size seen with the naked human eye. One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The XTi has one, while the GFX 50R does not. While the built-in flash of the XTi is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.
The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, the GFX 50R is one of those camera that have an additional electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).
The Fujifilm GFX 50R has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.
The XTi writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the GFX 50R uses SDXC cards. The GFX 50R features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the XTi only has one slot.

It is notable that the GFX 50R offers wifi support, which can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location. In contrast, the XTi does not provide wifi capability.
Studio photographers will appreciate that the Fujifilm GFX 50R (unlike the XTi) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
