Canon XT versus Canon T6i
The Canon EOS Rebel XT (called Canon 350D in some regions) and the Canon EOS Rebel T6i (labelled Canon 750D in some countries) are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in February 2005 and February 2015. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The XT has a resolution of 8 megapixel, whereas the T6i provides 24 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon T6i is considerably larger (111 percent) than the Canon XT. Moreover, the T6i is slightly heavier (3 percent) than the XT. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the XT nor the T6i are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The T6i was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 17 percent) than the XT, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the T6i is 1 percent bigger. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
With 24MP, the T6i offers a higher resolution than the XT (8MP), but the T6i has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 6.41μm for the XT). Yet, the T6i is a much more recent model (by 9 years and 11 months) than the XT, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.
For most cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under consideration, the T6i offers substantially better image quality than the XT (overall score 11 points higher). The advantage is based on 0.9 bits higher color depth, 1.2 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.5 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The T6i indeed provides for movie recording, while the XT does not. The highest resolution format that the T6i can use is 1080/60p.
Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The XT and the T6i are similar in the sense that both have an optical viewfinder. The latter is useful for getting a clear image for framing even in brightly lit environments. Both the XT and the T6i have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on ebay. The XT was replaced by the Canon Xti, while the T6i was followed by the Canon T7i.
So what conclusions can be drawn? Is the Canon XT better than the Canon T6i or vice versa? The listing below highlights the relative strengths of the two models.
Arguments in favor of the Canon EOS Rebel XT:
- More compact: Is smaller (127x94mm vs 132x101mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.
- More heavily discounted: Has been available for much longer (launched in February 2005).
Advantages of the Canon EOS Rebel T6i:
- More detail: Has more megapixels (24 vs 8MP), which boosts linear resolution by 74%.
- Better image quality: Scores substantially higher (11 points) in the DXO overall evaluation.
- More dynamic range: Captures a broader range of light and dark details (1.2 EV of extra DR).
- Better low-light sensitivity: Can shoot in dim conditions (0.5 stops ISO advantage).
- Broader imaging potential: Can capture not only stills but also 1080/60p video.
- Larger screen: Has a bigger rear LCD (3.0" vs 1.8") for image review and settings control.
- More detailed LCD: Has a higher resolution rear screen (1040k vs 115k dots).
- More flexible LCD: Has swivel screen for odd-angle shots in portrait or landscape orientation.
- Fewer buttons to press: Has a touchscreen to facilitate handling and shooting adjustments.
- Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (5 vs 3 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
- More affordable: Was released into a lower priced segment (17 percent cheaper at launch).
- More modern: Reflects 9 years and 11 months of technical progress since the XT launch.
If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the T6i is the clear winner of the contest (12 : 2 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs.
In any case, while the comparison of technical specifications can provide a useful overview of the capabilities of different cameras, it remains partial and cannot reveal, for example, the handling experience and imaging performance when actually working with the XT or the T6i. User reviews that are available, for instance, at amazon can sometimes shed light on these issues, but such feedback is all too often partial, inconsistent, and inaccurate. The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning. It should also be noted that some of the review sites have over time altered the way they render their verdicts.
