The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The G16 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 78 percent) than the XC10, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon XC10 vs G16

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon XC10 features an one-inch sensor and the Canon G16 a 1/1.7-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G16 is 66 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.75 and 4.65. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.

In addition, the XC10 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 7 months) than the G16, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the XC10 provides a higher video resolution than the G16. One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The XC10 has a touchscreen, while the G16 has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

Both the XC10 and the G16 have zoom lenses built in. The XC10 has a 24-240mm f/2.8-5.6 optic and the G16 offers a 28-140mm f/1.8-2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the XC10 provides a wider angle of view at the short end, as well as more tele-photo reach at the long end than the G16. The G16 offers the faster maximum aperture.

The XC10 writes its imaging data to CFast or SDXC cards, while the G16 uses SDXC cards. The XC10 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the G16 only has one slot. Both cameras can use UHS-I cards, which provide for Ultra High Speed data transfer of up to 104 MB/s.

It is notable that the XC10 has a microphone port, which is missing on the G16. Such an external microphone input can help to substantially improve the quality of audio recordings when a good external microphone is used.

The G16 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Canon. In contrast, the XC10 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay).
