Canon T8i vs Panasonic S1H
The Canon EOS Rebel T8i (called Canon 850D in some regions) and the Panasonic Lumix DC-S1H are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in February 2020 and May 2019. The T8i is a DSLR, while the S1H is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an APS-C (T8i) and a full frame (S1H) sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 24 megapixels.

Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The T8i was launched at a markedly lower price (by 81 percent) than the S1H, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon T8i features an APS-C sensor and the Panasonic S1H a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the S1H is 155 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
Even though the S1H has a larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 24 megapixels. This implies that the S1H has a lower pixel density and larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 5.94μm versus 3.72μm for the T8i), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. It should, however, be noted that the T8i is a somewhat more recent model (by 8 months) than the S1H, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that at least partly compensate for the smaller pixel size.
The T8i has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.
Unlike the T8i, the S1H has the capacity to capture high quality composite images (96MP) by combining multiple shots after shifting its sensor by miniscule distances. This multi-shot, pixel-shift mode is most suitable for photography of stationary objects (landscapes, studio scenes).
The Canon EOS Rebel T8i has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 25600, which can be extended to ISO 100-51200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Panasonic Lumix DC-S1H are ISO 100 to ISO 51200, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 50-204800.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the S1H provides a better video resolution than the T8i. It can shoot movie footage at 6K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 4K/24p.
