Canon T6 versus Canon G9 X

The Canon EOS Rebel T6 (called Canon 1300D in some regions) and the Canon PowerShot G9 X are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in March 2016 and October 2015. The T6 is a DSLR, while the G9X is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (T6) and an one-inch (G9X) sensor. The T6 has a resolution of 17.9 megapixel, whereas the G9X provides 20 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G9 X is considerably smaller (56 percent) than the Canon T6. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the T6 nor the G9X are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the G9X has a lens build in, whereas the T6 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the T6 gets 500 shots out of its LP-E10 battery, while the G9X can take 220 images on a single charge of its NB-13L power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon T6 vs Canon G9 X

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon T6 features an APS-C sensor and the Canon G9 X an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G9X is 65 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 2.7. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Despite having a smaller sensor, the G9X offers a higher resolution of 20 megapixel, compared with 17.9 MP of the T6. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 4.31μm for the T6). Moreover, it should be noted that the T6 is a somewhat more recent model (by 4 months) than the G9X, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the G9X provides a faster frame rate than the T6. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the T6 is limited to 1080/30p.

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the T6 has an optical viewfinder, which can be very useful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the G9X relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. Both the T6 and the G9X have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The G9X was replaced by the Canon G9 X Mark II, while the T6 was followed by the Canon T7.
