Canon T5i versus Canon 40D
The Canon EOS Rebel T5i (called Canon 700D in some regions) and the Canon EOS 40D are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in March 2013 and August 2007. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The T5i has a resolution of 17.9 megapixel, whereas the 40D provides 10.1 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 40D is notably larger (19 percent) than the Canon T5i. Moreover, the 40D is substantially heavier (42 percent) than the T5i. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the T5i nor the 40D are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The T5i was launched at a markedly lower price (by 50 percent) than the 40D, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Canon T5i vs Canon 40D
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.6. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
While the two cameras under review share the same sensor size, the T5i offers a higher resolution of 17.9 megapixel, compared with 10.1 MP of the 40D. This megapixel advantage translates into a 33 percent gain in linear resolution. On the other hand, these sensor specs imply that the T5i has a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 4.31μm versus 5.73μm for the 40D). In this context, it should be noted, however, that the T5i is much more recent (by 5 years and 7 months) than the 40D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that compensate for the smaller pixel size.
Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). The Overall DXO ratings for the two cameras under consideration are close, suggesting that they provide similar image quality. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The T5i indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the 40D does not. The highest resolution format that the T5i can use is 1080/30p.

Both the T5i and the 40D have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The 40D was replaced by the Canon 50D, while the T5i was followed by the Canon T6i.

So what is the bottom line? Is the Canon T5i better than the Canon 40D or vice versa? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.
Reasons to prefer the Canon EOS Rebel T5i:
- More detail: Offers more megapixels (17.9 vs 10.1MP) with a 33% higher linear resolution.
- Broader imaging potential: Can record not only still images but also 1080/30p movies.

- More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in August 2007).

However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.
