Canon T5i versus Canon 1D C

The Canon EOS Rebel T5i (called Canon 700D in some regions) and the Canon EOS-1D C are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in March 2013 and April 2012. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are based on an APS-C (T5i) and a full frame (1DC) sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 17.9 megapixel. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 1D C is considerably larger (95 percent) than the Canon T5i. Moreover, the 1DC is substantially heavier (166 percent) than the T5i. It is noteworthy in this context that the 1DC is splash and dust-proof, while the T5i does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor (as in the 1DC) will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, while more compact options are available for the smaller-sensor camera (T5i). Concerning battery life, the T5i gets 440 shots out of its LP-E8 battery, while the 1DC can take 1120 images on a single charge of its LP-E4N power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The T5i was launched at a markedly lower price (by 96 percent) than the 1DC, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon T5i vs Canon 1D C

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon T5i features an APS-C sensor and the Canon 1D C a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the 1DC is 160 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors.

Canon T5i and Canon 1D C sensor measures

Even though the 1DC has a larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 17.9 megapixel. This implies that the 1DC has a lower pixel density and larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 6.95μm versus 4.31μm for the T5i), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. It should, however, be noted that the T5i is a somewhat more recent model (by 11 months) than the 1DC, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that at least partly compensate for the smaller pixel size.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the 1DC provides a better video resolution than the T5i. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/24p, while the T5i is limited to 1080/30p.

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. The T5i and the 1DC are similar in the sense that both have an optical viewfinder. Both the T5i and the 1DC have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The T5i was replaced by the Canon T6i, while the 1DC does not have a direct successor.

So what is the bottom line? Which of the two cameras – the Canon T5i or the Canon 1D C – has the upper hand? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.


Advantages of the Canon EOS Rebel T5i:

  • More flexible LCD: Has swivel screen for odd-angle shots in portrait or landscape orientation.
  • Fewer buttons to press: Is equipped with a touch-sensitive rear screen to facilitate handling.
  • More compact: Is smaller (133x100mm vs 158x164mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.
  • Less heavy: Is lighter (by 965g or 62 percent) and hence easier to carry around.
  • Easier fill-in: Is equipped with a small onboard flash to brighten deep shadow areas.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (96 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More modern: Is somewhat more recent (announced 11 months after the 1DC).


Reasons to prefer the Canon EOS-1D C:

  • Better low-light imaging: Features bigger pixels on a larger sensor for better high-ISO images.
  • Better video: Provides higher definition movie capture (4K/24p vs 1080/30p).
  • Easier setting verification: Has a control panel on top to check shooting parameters.
  • Larger screen: Has a bigger rear LCD (3.2" vs 3.0") for image review and settings control.
  • Faster shutter: Has higher mechanical shutter speed (8000/sec vs 4000/sec) to freeze action.
  • Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (14 vs 5 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
  • Longer lasting: Gets more shots (1120 versus 440) out of a single battery charge.
  • Better sealing: Is splash and dust sealed for shooting in inclement weather conditions.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in April 2012).

If the count of individual advantages (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the 1DC emerges as the winner of the match-up (9 : 7 points). However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features before making a decision on a new camera.
