The Canon PowerShot SX740 HS and the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in July 2018 and August 2020. Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The SX740 was launched at a lower price than the E-M10 IV, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon SX740 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Olympus E-M10 IV a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the E-M10 IV is 704 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 2.0. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.
Even though the E-M10 IV has a larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 20.2 megapixels. This implies that the E-M10 IV has a lower pixel density and larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 3.34μm versus 1.18μm for the SX740), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. In addition, the E-M10 IV is much more recent (by 2 years) than the SX740, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.
The Canon PowerShot SX740 HS has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 3200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV are ISO 200 to ISO 25600, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-25600.

One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The E-M10 IV has a touchscreen, while the SX740 has a conventional panel. It is notable that the E-M10 IV has a hotshoe, which makes it possible to easily attach optional accessories, such as an external flash gun. The SX740 does not feature such an accessory-socket.
