Canon SX740 versus Hasselblad X1D

The Canon PowerShot SX740 HS and the Hasselblad X1D-50c are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in July 2018 and June 2016. The SX740 is a fixed lens compact, while the X1D is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on a 1/2.3-inch (SX740) and a medium format (X1D) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 20.2 megapixel, whereas the Hasselblad provides 51.3 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Hasselblad X1D is considerably larger (109 percent) than the Canon SX740. It is noteworthy in this context that the X1D is splash and dust-proof, while the SX740 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the SX740 has a lens build in, whereas the X1D is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Attaching the latter will add extra weight and bulk to the setup.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The SX740 was launched at a lower price than the X1D, despite having a lens build in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon SX740 vs Hasselblad X1D

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon SX740 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Hasselblad X1D a medium format sensor. The sensor area in the X1D is 5046 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 0.79. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.

With 51.3MP, the X1D offers a higher resolution than the SX740 (20.2MP), but the X1D nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.30μm versus 1.18μm for the SX740) due to its larger sensor. However, the SX740 is a much more recent model (by 2 years and 1 month) than the X1D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the SX740 provides a higher video resolution than the X1D. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Hasselblad is limited to 1080/25p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The SX740 has one, while the X1D does not. While the build-in flash of the SX740 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

Both the SX740 and the X1D write their imaging data to SDXC cards. The X1D features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the SX740 only has one slot.

The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review.
