The Canon PowerShot SX510 HS and the Leica S-E (Typ 006) are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in August 2013 and September 2014. Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The SX510 was launched at a lower price than the S-E Typ 006, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon SX510 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Leica S-E Typ 006 a medium format sensor. The sensor area in the S-E Typ 006 is 4721 percent bigger. The sensor in the SX510 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the S-E Typ 006 offers a 3:2 aspect.
With 37.5MP, the S-E Typ 006 offers a higher resolution than the SX510 (15.9MP), but the S-E Typ 006 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 6.00μm versus 1.33μm for the SX510) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the S-E Typ 006 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year) than the SX510, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Leica S-E Typ 006 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the S-E Typ 006 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 37.5 x 25 inches or 95.3 x 63.5 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 30 x 20 inches or 76.2 x 50.8 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 25 x 16.7 inches or 63.5 x 42.3 cm. The corresponding values for the Canon SX510 are 23 x 17.3 inches or 58.5 x 43.9 cm for good quality, 18.4 x 13.8 inches or 46.8 x 35.1 cm for very good quality, and 15.4 x 11.5 inches or 39 x 29.3 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Canon PowerShot SX510 HS has a native sensitivity range from ISO 80 to ISO 3200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Leica S-E (Typ 006) are ISO 100 to ISO 1600 (no boost).

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The SX510 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the S-E Typ 006 does not. The highest resolution format that the SX510 can use is 1080/24p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The SX510 has one, while the S-E Typ 006 does not. While the built-in flash of the SX510 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.
The SX510 writes its imaging data to SDXC cards, while the S-E Typ 006 uses Compact Flash or SDXC cards. The S-E Typ 006 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the SX510 only has one slot. It is notable that the SX510 offers wifi support, while the S-E Typ 006 does not. Wifi can be a very convenient means to transfer image data to an off-camera location.
