Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The SX500 was somewhat cheaper (by 6 percent) than the SX700 at launch, but both cameras fall into the same price category. Technology-wise, the SX700 uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 6) than the SX500 (DIGIC 4), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

The two cameras under review do not only share the same sensor size, but also offer an identical resolution of 15.9 megapixels. This similarity in sensor specs implies that both the SX500 and the SX700 have the same pixel density, as well as the same pixel size. It should, however, be noted that the SX700 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 5 months) than the SX500, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both the SX500 and the SX700 have zoom lenses built in. The SX500 has a 24-720mm f/3.4-5.8 optic and the SX700 offers a 25-750mm f/3.2-6.9 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms).
